For me, this book is an immersion in all those moments of drawing and creation, described here so accurately and analysed so well. It’s like suddenly hearing music that you know, and rediscovering it as you listen. It is a pleasure for me to see such well-chosen comparisons between drawings from different periods and their similarities to each other. They are all projects that I experienced at first hand, and each one had its story, which is why I have never been able to compare them with such clarity.
Coming across whole chapters that analyse and explain those moments, and also different phases of their stories; discovering recurrent themes, relations between drawings and with drawings from other sources thanks to Fernández Contreras’ exhaustive knowledge about the works and their context, along with his great analytical capacity, has all given me an enthusiastic sense of surprise: “Ah…so I am not the leading expert on Enric Miralles! There is someone whose thorough study of the material and great intelligence has led him to understand Miralles better than me.” That thought makes me happy.
When we set up the Enric Miralles Foundation in 2012, our aim was precisely to make Enric’s ideas and documents accessible to all, knowing that we will surely discover his footprints out beyond the range of this studio. The most beautiful thing about this book is not only that its author has a deep understanding of Enric Miralles’ drawing process, but that he explains it so well that others will be able to open doors that have never been opened before, leading us towards a more universal understanding of this process to facilitate future developments and evolutions.

Javier Fernández Contreras (Dipl. ETSAM 2006, PhD 2013) is an architect, critic, and the dean of the Department of Interior Architecture at HEAD – Genève. His work explores the relationship between architecture, representation, and media, with a specific focus on the role of interiors in the construction of contemporaneity. Contreras is the director of MAIA, Master of Arts in Interior Architecture, and Scènes de Nuit, a research program investigating the entanglements between night and architecture. He is the author of the books Fragmentos de Planta y Espacio (2018), The Miralles Projection: Thinking and Representation in the Architecture of Enric Miralles (2020), Manifesto of Interiors: Thinking in the Expanded Media (2021), and co-editor of Scènes de Nuit: Night & Architecture (2021). A regular contributor to professional debates, jurys and conferences, his work has been presented in international galleries and venues, including f’ar Lausanne (2019), the 2021 Concentrico Design Festival, and the 2021 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (with EPFL and HEAD). His critical essays are published in numerous specialised journals and books such as Marie-José Van Hee Architecten, Massilia Annuaire des Études Corbuséennes, Drawing Matter, RA Revista de Arquitectura, India Mahdavi, Bitacora, RADDAR, and Plan Libre.
