Manifesto of Interiors: Thinking in the Expanded Media [ x ]

When in 1929 René Magritte presented the work Ceci n’est pas une pipe, he essentially revealed, apart from a fascination with the seduction of images, the role of art as an intermediary between the world and the observer. Aware that interferences may arise in the representation of things, he articulated a manifesto as evident as it was provocative: images of things are not things themselves, but rather representations, and as such they do not need to respect the same rules.

The reference to Magritte’s painting is revealing in the contemporary world, in which contact with architecture is no longer fully the result of direct experience, having been gradually replaced by a ‘mediated experience’. Ultimately, which media construct the relationship between space and its perception? This question addresses, as in the case of Magritte’s painting, the format of representation itself.

Considering any form of representation as potentially architectural, from writing to photography, drawing to cinema, Manifesto of Interiors traces the origins of this process of hybridisation between space and media back to the Renaissance and addresses the role of interior spaces as an experimental laboratory of late modernity. Combining historic scholarship with forthright hypotheses, this book explores contemporary interiors as platforms of ‘expanded media’, examining their belonging to different places and temporalities, whether physical or virtual, close or distant, ultimately reasserting the role of interior architecture in the construction of contemporaneity.
